Your Wednesday bed bug news from Red Coat Services.

- This hotel has been out of service for months due to bed bugs and other issues.

- The word cilantro came from the Greek word for bed bug. Who knew?

- You may be hearing less about bed bugs in the national news, however the problem is actually getting worse.

- This family trip to Alabama turned into a nightmare when they got back home to Louisiana. Those Alabama bed bugs are apparently as mean towards Louisiana folks as the Crimson Tide.

- This is what happens when a landlord and tenant fight over bed bugs. I’m surprised the police actually wrapped the mattress.

Bed bugs are quickly becoming an international problem.

- Chattanooga is finding that bed bugs are an expensive habit. Maybe if they used heat instead of chemicals they would be rid of the problem by now.

Shortage of bed bug funding is an issue many cities are having trouble coming to terms with.

The Bed Bug Poop Scoop

Bed bug fact or fiction? That is what I want to know.

Lately, every time I check my Red Coat Services bed bug twitter feed (@BedBugAnswer), I see another comment about some new product that will completely eradicate bed bugs from your home or business. One week it’s a new spray. The next week it’s a new powder. Recently, I saw a PR release that touted a detergent that fought bed bugs. By the way, when did PR releases and news articles become one in the same?

Today, I read this article about bed bugs that touted bed bug poop as the new savior. The creators claim that they can lure bed bugs into traps by using a chemical compound that copies the scent of bed bug poop. Now, I have not seen the research and so I won’t comment on whether or not they are full of poop. However, from working in homes and hotels with infestations, I just can’t see how this will eliminate your problem.  Yes, if the chemical does work, you will probably catch some bed bugs. However, when you have an infestation, you will find poop in all kinds of places. How can the researchers predict that the bed bugs will go to the traps, and not back to the mattress, headboard or closet? Like I said, I have yet to see the product up close. However at this time, I remain skeptical that this not just another worthless bed bug product. For me, heat is the only proven answer.

What Are Bed Bug Skins or Shells?

In order for a young #bedbug to grow into a sexually mature reproducing bed bug, they must feed.  When I say feed, I mean drink mammal blood.  When they eat, they grow and exceed the capacity of their own exoskeleton.  This process causes the bed bug to literally shed its skin (molt) and move to the next level of life.  The bed bug will molt five times before it is sexually mature.  Prior to maturity the young females (instars or nymphs) release a chemical which repels the adult males.  But once that chemical is gone, the process begins again. Now you know.

May the heat be with you!

Bed Bug Life Stages

The Wolfman and Bedbugs.

It appears the Wolfman does not have much to fear from #bedbugs. According to this BBC bed bug article, people with more body hair have a higher level of protection from bedbugs than those with less hair. The hairs apparently act as a defense system and an early warning system to the body when the nerves are activated. It appears this may have been an adaptation of our ancestors to protect themselves from bed bugs. However, the hair was not or is not a body of armor. Bed bugs can still bite you and will always find a way to have their next meal. So next time your wife tells you to shave or cut your hair, tell hair you are protecting yourself from bedbugs.
