Killing Bed Bugs with a Washer and Dryer

If you are trying to treat your belongings that are infested with bed bugs, the dryer is your new best friend.  I always recommend drying the items first to kill the bed bugs, then washing and drying them as normal to get the dead bugs off the clothes.  Here is a bit of research provided by Pest West Environmental on the effectiveness of washing and drying.  Note: always treat your clothing at temps high enough to kill eggs.

May The Heat Be With You!

Commercial Property Bed Bug Insurance

Many of you have read or heard by now the bed bug problems the University of Nebraska is having. The school made headlines because of their poor handling of the situation which now has students and parents in a panic. The school got off to a bad start by not communicating the proper steps students could take to protect themselves. It seems the school has redeemed themselves and has instituted an all-out assault on the freeloading bed bugs.

What I find even more interesting is the fact that several of the fraternities on campus are now exploring the option of purchasing bed bug insurance. According to the article, Willis Global Insurance has a bed bug policy that would protect the fraternity in case if an infestation. Knowing that it could cost the fraternity tens of thousands of dollars to treat a frat wide infestation, spending $2,000 on a policy is a really good investment.

I wrote about bed bug insurance in the past and I actually reached out to some insurers. However I never received any answers to my questions. I think insurance is a good idea, but like most things, the devil is in the details and I think we will see policies evolve as insurers become more familiar with the type of damage bed bugs can cause. So if you are a hotel or apartment owner, be sure to read the fine print before signing up for any insurance.

Why Are There Bed Bugs In My Clothes?!?

This question has come across my desk multiple times this past year. A client either finds bugs on their person during the day or they find bed bugs in their closet among their clothes.
Typically bed bugs don’t like to live in the clothes you are wearing. They don’t like a great deal of movement on a day-to-day basis. They will hitchhike when hungry or looking for a new home, but they generally prefer dark cryptic stable locations for their harborage.
In all of these situations the client had previously treated their home with pesticide or with dust. The chemical became a massive repellant to the bed bug and they merely found a new place to live that was not contaminated. The closet is often close by to the bedroom and bed and the clothes are rarely treated with chemicals. This creates a perfect scenario for the bed bug. They get an occasional meal and transportation out of the poison that you laid for them.
This means you are likely taking the bugs to work with you as well as your friend’s house etc. So what to do? Stop spraying bed bugs! The clothes can be run through the dryer on high for about 45 minutes. Then wash and dry them again to remove the dead bugs. However, if they have found your closet they have also found all the other hiding places that chemicals did not reach the first time. A whole room heat treatment is really the only option to stop them completely.

May the heat be with you!
